With the British summer holiday period in full swing, here are our top tips on how to stay safe at the beach.
- Ensure you make a lifeguard aware if you see anyone get into trouble in the water.
- Never leave children unattended near water.
- Before heading into the sea, make sure you have observed the colour of the flag that the lifeguard is flying, in order to assess the safety condition of the sea.
Red = Danger, no swimming.
Yellow = Caution, seek advice before swimming.
Green = Safe to swim. - Don’t swim alone.
- If the sea current is strong, or if it is a windy day, do not use inflatables such as lilos and rubber rings.
- Don’t go into the sea if you are intoxicated.
- Make sure all children unable or less confident with swimming have sufficient flotation aids, and are monitored at all times when in the water.
- Don’t go swimming in the dark.
- Only swim at a beach with a lifeguard on duty.
- If you find yourself in any difficulty in the sea, attempt to get someone's attention in order to inform a lifeguard. This could be done by shouting and/or waving your arms.
