The Åland Islands is a region of Finland that consist of group of islands located in the Baltic Sea. The islands are the only Swedish speaking region in Finland. 90% of the overall population live on Fasta Åland which homes of the capital of the islands, Mariehamn. Mariehamn is the largest city within the islands.

There are around 300 islands that come together to make the Åland Islands, only 80 of these islands are inhabited. There are many harbours throughout the islands for easy access. The land itself is mostly rocky and hilly. The Åland Islands have a humid climate. The islands do not have a dry season but they do have warm summers which can be shown to be attractive to tourists. Temperatures can be as high as 20°C (68°F) or as low as -8°C (17.6°F).

You are allowed to drive on the Åland Islands, most of the roads are well kept and usually run calmly. You are required to have a UK driving license before you are allowed to hire or drive a car. You must drive on the left side of the road. It is advised to take care on the roads on the Åland Islands, most of the roads will be cleared of snow and ice but general care is advised.

Crime is extremely low on the Åland Islands. However, general care is advised, there has been cases of theft reported but not many cases of larger crimes. Keep an eye of your belongings and your trip should be trouble-free.

You will be required to show a valid UK passport if you are a British national, other nationalities will have to check with the Åland government for passport requirements. Your passport will need to be valid for your stay.

You will need to obtain a visa, these are specifically Åland island visas which we allow you to enter the islands. You will not be able to enter the islands under a Denmark visa unless it is clearly stated on your visa that you have access.

Architecture, cuisine and sport are all aspects of the culture of the Åland Islands. The islands boast fantastic castles and fortresses that can be viewed by tourists, most popular castle and fortress are the Kastelholm Castle and Bomarsund. Most of the Island's' cuisine is influenced by Finnish tradition, the islands do add unique twists to these delights. One famous delight is the Karelian pasty. The Åland Islands do have a national football team which have competed in many competitions such as the Island Games.
