Direct Travel Insurance Guide to Algeria

Algeria is the tenth largest country in the world, and the largest in Africa. It is bordered by Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, the Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, and the Mediterranean Sea. Algeria is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Arab League, OPEC, and the Maghreb Union.

The capital, Algiers, is situated at a central point of the Mediterranean coastline in northern Algeria. It is twinned with Paris, France; London, UK; Berlin, Germany; and Rome, Italy, among other cities.

There are several UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Algeria, and a tourism development strategy has been in place since 2004. This has led to many modern hotels of a high standard being built, and substantial improvements to transport and facilities for tourists.

More than four fifths of Algeria is comprised of desert. Northern Algeria offers a mild, Mediterranean climate similar to that of California. Much of the climate in Algeria is arid, however, and vast variations in average temperatures have been recorded.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advise against travel to some areas of Algeria, please check their advice here - https://www.algerian-consulate.org.uk - before you book your trip. Direct Travel Insurance are unable to offer cover for travel to any country against FCDO advice.

It is generally safe to travel around Algiers and other main cities, though there is a high threat of terrorism in Algeria, and visitors are advised to take great care at all times. The Algerian authorities will want details of your travel plans if you are travelling outside of major cities. You should provide these details to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Before travelling, you will need to obtain a visa from the Algerian Consulate. Passports must be valid for a minimum of six months from the date of entry into Algeria.
