Bonaire is an island situated in the Leeward Antilles within the Caribbean Sea. The island is a part of the ABC islands, Bonaire, Aruba and Curaçao are all islands within the ABC islands. Bonaire lies outside the hurricane belt which means that the weather is usually constantly warm and sunny. The island is popular with scuba divers as there is easy access to reefs from the island.

Bonaire is about 50m from South America and is widely considered a part of South America due to the continent being close by. The northern parts of Bonaire are mostly mountainous and the southern parts of Bonaire are completely flat. Bonaire has an arid climate. It can be slightly windy but the island is mostly warm and sunny. Temperatures can be as high as 32°C (90°F) or as low as 25°C (77°F).

You are allowed to drive on Bonaire, you will require a full valid driving license before you are allowed to drive. You must drive on the right. Roads can be dangerous when wet, take care when driving at all times. There are taxis which you can use but it is advised that you agree the price before beginning your journey.

Crime is moderate on Bonaire, most trips are trouble-free. However, petty crimes such as pickpocketing are common. There is a large concern of drug dealing and trafficking but this does not affect tourists. Do not leave your valuables alone, try to avoid travelling alone at night and do not hold parcels or any items for a person you do not know.

You are allowed to stay in Bonaire for three months without a visa. If you wish to stay for longer then you will have to contact the Netherlands Embassy and request the extension.

You will require a passport, your passport will need to be valid for 6 months after the date of arrival in Bonaire.

ATMs are available throughout Bonaire, most cards are accepted but it is advised to take cash to cover yourself.

Visit your health professional prior to travelling. There has been reported cases of the Zika virus present on Bonaire, you will need to speak to your health professional about this before travelling. There has also been cases of the Chikungunya virus, avoid getting bit by mosquitoes to prevent yourself from catching the virus. As the EHIC card is not valid in Bonaire, it is strongly advised that you get adequate travel/medical insurance to cover yourself. If you need medical assistance, dial 911 and ask for an ambulance.

There are two relay stations that operate on the island, Trans World Radio and Radio Netherlands. Sports are popular in Bonaire, two of the most popular sports are baseball and scuba diving. Bonaire play in both the little league and the Pony league in baseball. Scuba diving is popular with tourists as there are many easy accessible reefs that can be enjoyed by diving or just snorkelling.
