Egypt is bordered by the Gaza Strip, Israel, the Gulf of Aqaba, the Red Sea, Sudan, and Libya. It is considered a cradle of civilisation, and boasts some of the earliest developments in urbanisation, agriculture, organised religion and government, and writing. The ancient archaeology of Egypt is still a significant focus of research and popular interest.

The majority of Egypt’s inhabitants live near the Nile River, with about half of all residents living in urban areas across Cairo, Alexandria, and other cities in the Nile Delta. Much of the larger regions of the Sahara desert are uninhabited.

The Great Pyramid at Giza is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and is the only one which still survives. Tourism provides much of Egypt’s revenue, and the tourism sector employs around 12% of Egypt’s workforce.
