Situated in the Horn of Africa, Eritrea is bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and the Red Sea. It has no official languages, and most of its residents speak Afroasiatic languages. The Tigrinya community makes up about 55% of the population.
The capital city of Asmara is the largest settlement in Eritrea. Having been the capital of Italian Eritrea during Italy’s occupation of the country, it is well-known for its Italian modernist architecture.
Italian Asmara was developed hugely in the 1930s, economically, socially, and culturally, with an opera house and a car racing circuit built, as well as an Art Deco cinema.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office may advise against travel to some areas of Eritrea. Please check for updates here - https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/eritrea - before you book your trip. Direct Travel Insurance are unable to offer cover for travel to any area against FCDO advice.
All foreign nationals must apply for a travel permit to leave the capital city of Asmara in advance, and British nationals will need a visa to enter Eritrea. Eritrea’s currency is the Nakfa. It is a closed currency, and therefore you cannot convert Nakfa to any other currency (or vice versa) outside of Eritrea. Additionally, Eritrea has a cash-based economy.
There are no ATMs or credit card facilities in the country. Many hotels will ask you to pay in US dollars.
