Direct Travel Insurance Guide to Iraq

Iraq borders Turkey, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria. It has a narrow section of coastline on the Persian Gulf, and the southern part of the country lies within the Arabian Peninsula. The capital, Baghdad, is the largest city, with approximately nine million inhabitants.

Currently, the FCDO advise against all travel to some areas of Iraq, and against all but essential travel to other areas. Please check for updates to travel advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office here - https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/iraq - before you book your trip. Direct Travel Insurance are unable to offer cover for travel to any area or country which the FCDO advise against.

Daesh (also known as ISIL or ISIS) and other groups control parts of Iraq. Many areas recently liberated from Daesh remain under significant risk, and may contain improvised explosive devices and other remnants of war. Security in the country is uncertain, and situations are liable to change quickly. British nationals are advised to have robust contingency plans in place in the event of a change in situation. The British Embassy in Baghdad are able to offer only very limited consular assistance by appointment only.

Some airlines are no longer operating flights to Iraq, and travel disruption continues with airport closures and/or changes to flight schedules which may be announced at any time, and at very short notice. It is advisable to contact your airline for up to date information before you travel. Border crossing points are also liable to close at any time.
