Lebanon is bordered by Syria and Israel, and it has a long coastline with the Mediterranean Sea. Beirut, the capital city, was known as the “Paris of the Middle East” in its heyday, due to the amount of tourists it attracted. It is the country’s main seaport, and its landscape underwent major reconstruction following the Lebanese Civil War. The city has a hot Mediterranean climate, with very little rainfall in summer, and temperature highs of 32 degrees in August.

As the most religiously diverse country in the Middle East, Lebanon observes both Muslim and Christian customs, and visitors should take care to observe these where necessary, especially during Ramadan. A national census has not been carried out since 1932, due to the sensitive nature of various religious groups. There are 18 religious sects recognised by the state; 12 are Christian (including Maronite and Melkite Catholicism, Protestantism, Greek Orthodoxy, and other Christian groups), 4 are Muslim (including Shia Islam, Sunni Islam, and others), one Druze, and one Jewish.

Other religious groups and denominations including Baha’is, Buddhists, Hindus, and Mormons, reside in areas across the country. Almost 40% of Lebanon’s population speak French, and around 70% of secondary schools use French as a second language.
