Business meetings are usually formal with suit and tie generally expected. Although English is widely spoken, an interest in Spanish and an effort on the part of the visitor to speak even a few words will be appreciated. Business cards are exchanged frequently as a matter of courtesy and appointments should be made. Office hours hours tend to vary considerably. Business people are advised to check before making calls.
While most of Spain has a low rate of violent crime, the principal tourist areas are experiencing increasing crime directed against tourists. Madrid, in particular, has reported a growing incidence of muggings by gangs brandishing weapons and/or using force. Non-confrontational street crime, such as pick-pocketing and bag snatching, is a common problem, particularly in tourist areas and on public transport in large cities, especially Madrid and Barcelona. The perpetrators are often highly skilled at stealing valuables, including passports and money, without attracting the owner's attention. Thieves often use various ploys to distract the attention of tourists while an accomplice carries out thefts. A criminal may use large maps or offers of assistance to distract a traveler's attention, while an accomplice steals the traveller's belongings. Another ploy is to squirt mustard on a traveler's clothing. Street crime is occasionally accompanied by violence. In Madrid, take particular care in the Puerta del Sol and surrounding streets including the Plaza Mayor, the Retiro Park and Lavapies. In Barcelona, be especially vigilant in the Plaza Catalunya, Ramblas and surrounding streets of the old city and be aware of the possibility of violent muggings in the Monjuic area. There have been incidents of thieves posing as plain-clothes police officers and while pretending to enquire after identification, steal money and credit cards from tourists' wallets. Thieves also target motorists by either convincing travellers to pull over due to a "problem" with their vehicle or offering assistance to change a slashed or flat tyre. While assisting the motorist, an accomplice steals from the car. Cars with foreign license plates are often targeted. Be extremely cautious about accepting help from anyone other than a uniformed Spanish police officer or Civil Guard. Travelers who accept unofficial assistance are advised to protect their valuables by keeping them in sight or locking them in the vehicle. Be especially wary of false police officers on the M30 and M40 Madrid ring roads, the A4 and A5 routes. The Spanish Police can be reached at the 112 emergency number. At the Malaga airport, robbers are particularly targeting rental vehicles on the exit road and nearby highways by indicating that there is a problem with the vehicle's tires. When the vehicle stops the robbers will offer assistance and take advantage of distractions to steal valuables from inside the vehicle. Credit card and ATM fraud, often involving sophisticated equipment, is on the rise. Use ATMs located in the bank lobby wherever possible. Incidents of drink spiking resulting in theft and sexual assault have been reported. The incidence of rape and other sexual offenses is statistically low, but nonetheless attacks occur. Spanish authorities warn travelers to be alert to the availability and possible use of "date rape" and other drugs, including "GBH" and liquid ecstasy.
A variety of hotel-type accommodations are available including apartment-hotels, hotel-residencias and motels. Spanish hotels are comparable to those found in the rest of Western Europe.
Telephone IDD service is available. The country code is 34 and the outgoing international code is 07. City codes for a selection of major centers are: Madrid 1, Alicante 6, Balearic Islands 71, Barcelona 3, Benidorm 6, Bilbao 4, Granada 58, Las Palmas 28, M?laga and Torremolinos 5, Santander 42, Seville 5, Tenerife 22 and Valencia 6. For calls made from within Spain, dial 9 before the above numbers. Fax facilities are generally available hotels, especially those catering for the business and conference traveler. Public phones in Spain accept coins and pre-paid Telefonica credit cards. Some public phones also accept commercial credit cards.

Eating out in Spain is often cheap and meals are substantial rather than gourmet. One of the best ways to sample Spanish food is to try tapas, or snacks, which are served at any time of day in local bars. These range from cheese and olives to squid or meat delicacies and are priced accordingly. Restaurants are classified by the Government and many offer tourist menus (menu del d?a). Restaurants and cafes have table service. Cocktail lounges have table and/or counter service. There are no licensing hours.
National specialties:
? Seafood: cod vizcaina or cod pil-pil (Basque provinces); Angulas, the tasty baby eels (Aguinaga); shellfish and hake ? la Gallega (Galicia); lobster Catalan (Catalonia); fresh anchovies (Andaluc?a).
? Paella based on meat or seafood (Eastern provinces).
? Butifarra sausage stewed with beans (Catalonia).
? Roast meats: lamb, beef, veal and suckling pig (Castile).
? Gazpacho, a delicious cold vegetable soup (Andaluc?a).
? Jabugo ham (Huelva). National drinks: ?Sherry (there are four main types: fino (very pale and very dry), amontillado (dry, richer in body and darker in color), oloroso (medium, full-bodied, fragrant and golden) and dulce (sweet)).
? Wine: Rioja (Logro?); Valdepe?as (midway between Madrid and Cord?ba); Ampurd?n; Chacol? (Basque Country) and Perelada (Catalonia); Cava (sparkling wine): Codorni? and Freixenet are popular.
? Spanish brandy: Lanjar?n, Vichy Catalan, Malavella and Font Vella.
Tipping:
Service charges and taxes are usually included in hotel bills, however in addition, a tip should be left for the chambermaid and porters should be tipped per bag. It is also customary to leave a tip for the waiter. Restaurants often include service in the bill so a tip is discretionary. In cafes and bars, it is 5 to 10 per cent. Tip taxis 10 to 15 per cent when metered.
Nightlife
Spaniards often start the evening with el paseo, a leisurely stroll through the main streets. A cafe terrace is an excellent vantage point to observe this tradition, or enjoy street theater in the larger cities. The atmosphere is especially vibrant at fiesta time, or when the local football team has won, when celebrations are marked by a cacophony of car horns, firecrackers and a sea of flags and team regalia. Tapas bars offer delicious snacks in a relaxed, enjoyable setting and it is fun to try out several bars in one night. The nightclubs of Ibiza, Barcelona and Madrid have attracted the attention of the international media, but the variety on offer caters for most tastes. Things work up to la marcha (good fun) relatively late and it is possible to literally dance until dawn. Flamenco or other regional dancing displays provide an alternative for those who prefer to watch dancing.

High quality dental care is available in Spain
Supplies of international medications are generally available from both the hospitals and private pharmacies in Spain
Blood supplies are considered safe and screened to international standards
Good medical care is available.
Recent medical and dental exams should ensure that the traveler is in good health. Carry appropriate health and accident insurance documents and copies of any important medical records. Bring an adequate supply of all prescription and other medications as well as any necessary personal hygiene items, including a spare pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses if necessary. Take personal protective measures against insects. Drink only bottled beverages (including water) or beverages made with boiled water. Do not use ice cubes or eat raw seafood or rare meat. Eat well-cooked foods while they are still hot and fruits that can be peeled without contamination. Avoid roadside stands and street vendors. Only pasteurized dairy products should be consumed.
Wide temperature variations in Madrid can aggravate respiratory ailments. Soft coal burned for winter heating leaves pollutants that can aggravate allergies and may increase susceptibility to respiratory ailments. Air pollution and smog are growing problems and do reach menacing, bothersome levels in all of Spain's large cities. The dry atmosphere may cause skin irritations or aggravate allergies. Hikers in wooded areas should take protective measures against ticks.
Hepatitis A: Consider active immunization with hepatitis A vaccine or passive immunization with immune globulin (IG) for all susceptible travelers. Especially consider choosing active immunization for persons planning to reside for a long period or for persons who take frequent short-term trips to risk areas. The importance of protection against hepatitis A increases as length of stay increases. It is particularly important for persons who will be living in or visiting rural areas, eating or drinking in settings of poor or uncertain sanitation, or who will have close contact with local persons (especially young children) in settings with poor sanitary conditions. Hepatitis B: Vaccination is advised for health care workers, persons anticipating direct contact with blood from or sexual contact with inhabitants, and persons planning extended stays of 6 months or greater (especially those who anticipate using local health care facilities, staying in rural areas, or having intimate contact with the local population). Typhoid: Vaccination should be considered for persons staying longer than 3 weeks, adventurous eaters, and those who will venture off the usual tourist routes into small cities, villages and rural areas. Importance of vaccination increases as access to reasonable medical care becomes limited. Contraindications depend on vaccine type. Note: All routine vaccines (such as DTP or Td, Hib, MMR, polio, varicella, influenza and pneumococcal) should be kept up-to-date as a matter of good health practice unrelated to travel.
Sanitary conditions are good in Spain's large cities. Most traveler's health problems arise from lack of proper food storage and refrigeration or deficiencies in water systems or in preparation of uncooked vegetables. The most prevalent local illnesses are upper respiratory infections, gastroenteritis, influenza, measles, chicken pox, hepatitis, mumps and whooping cough. No rabies has been reported for several years except in Ceuta/Melilla. Typhoid and tuberculosis are both still present in all regions but are far less prevalent than a few years ago. Also see the following: Insect-borne illness: Leishmaniasis (visceral and cutaneous) - occurs Sandfly fever - occurs Typhus (Murine and tick-borne) - occurs West Nile fever (mosquito-borne) - occurs (The above occur in Mediterranean coastal areas.) Lyme disease occurs Food-borne and water-borne illness: bacillary dysentery and other diarrheas and typhoid fever are more common in the summer and autumn. Brucellosis - occurs Other hazards: Diseases such as measles and diphtheria are commonly reported. Influenza risk extends from November to April.
AIDS: According to the Department of State, anyone seeking residence, work and student permits must submit to a medical exam (which may include an AIDS test). Foreign test results are accepted under certain conditions. Contact Spain's embassy for details.
