The United Arab Emirates (also known as the UAE, or Emirates) is a country on the Persian Gulf. It has borders with Oman, Saudi Arabia, and sea borders with Qatar and Iran. Of the UAE’s population, around 80% are expatriates. More than 100,000 British nationals are resident in the United Arab Emirates.

Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, but Dubai is the largest, with a population of over 2 million. The UAE has a hot desert climate, with an average year round temperature of 28 degrees. July and August have seen highs of around 49 degrees, but average summer temperatures are around the high 30s/low 40s.

Abu Dhabi is vastly multicultural, and there are a variety of both Asian and Western influences on the city, however Dubai is more liberal, especially regarding the sale and consumption of alcohol. Called the “shopping capital of the Middle East,” Dubai has over 70 shopping centres, including the world’s largest, the Dubai Mall. Tourism is an important focus of Dubai’s government, and the emirate also offers architecture, music, and cuisine to attract visitors to the city.

Some medicines prescribed in the UK are considered controlled substances in the UAE. You should keep a copy of your prescription with any medication, and keep all medication in its original packaging.

British citizens can obtain a 30 day visa on arrival to the UAE. This can be extended for a further 30 days by visiting an immigration office in the United Arab Emirates. Your passport should be valid for a minimum of six months from the date of entry into the UAE.
