Yemen is the second largest country in the Arabian Peninsula, and is bordered by Saudi Arabia, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, and Oman. The capital city is constitutionally stated as Sana’a, but has been temporarily relocated to Aden, in the south. Sana’a has been under rebel control since February 2015.
Currently, the FCDO advise against all travel to Yemen, including all islands. If you are currently in Yemen, you are advised to leave immediately. This advice has been consistent since March 2011. Direct Travel Insurance are unable to offer cover to any area or country which the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advise against travel to. Updates to Yemen’s travel advice can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/yemen. The British Government are unable to provide any form of assisted departure to British nationals in Yemen.
In addition to this advice, the FCDO also advise against all travel to areas in Saudi Arabia within 10km, and all but essential travel between 10km and 80km, of the border with Yemen.
Security throughout Yemen is unstable and the threat of terrorist attacks, unlawful detention, and kidnap remains high. Terrorist and criminal groups, as well as local militia and armed tribesmen have the capabilities and intent to carry out this activity. Heavy fighting is ongoing, and includes continuing airstrikes from Saudi Arabia against areas controlled by Houthis and Saleh loyalists. Due to continued fighting, access to clean water, food, fuel, and medical supplies is difficult. At border crossings, there are reports that food, water, and accommodation are extremely scarce.
In November 2016, The British FCDO declared a nationwide outbreak of Cholera.
Cholera is a bacterial infection caused by eating food or drinking water that is contaminated. The disease can potentially be fatal.
If you are travelling to Yemen, there are a number of ways in which you can prevent yourself from contracting Cholera. You should:
Avoid consuming any unwashed and/or uncooked fruit and vegetables. Not consume seafood or shellfish. Not have ice in your beverages. Only drink bottled or boiled water.
An oral cholera vaccination is available to protect you against the disease.
