Travel alerts issued by FCDO over extreme flooding in Thailand

The British FCDO have released a weather alert for extreme flooding in some parts of Northern Thailand.

Warnings from the Thai Meteorological Department, suggested that strong winds have been resulting in waves of around 2-4 meters in the Andaman Sea area.

The department said: “More rain is likely over Thailand with isolated heavy to very heavy rain in the North, and the Northeast.

“Provinces include Loei, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Lamphun, Lampang, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun during 18-20 August.

“People should beware of the severe conditions.”

The severe weather conditions, which begun yesterday, include thunderstorms, strong winds, strong waves, and monsoons, and are set to last until 20th August.

Captains of ships have been advised to watch the weather updates closely and only ‘proceed with caution.’ All other small vessels have been advised to remain ashore.

Updating their travel advisory, the British FCDO said that the extreme weather conditions have been creating “difficult conditions.”

They went on to say: “Beaches are likely to be affected. You should follow the advice of local authorities.”

The advice also suggested that travellers should keep updated with local weather reports.
