A warning has been issued to travellers after heavy rain continues to batter Thailand, leaving 18 people dead.
The widespread flooding is currently affecting areas in the south of Thailand, including popular destinations with tourists including Koh Samui, Krabi, Koh Phangan, and Trang.
Some southern communities have been submerged in water, leaving many having to be evacuated by armed forces.
Aid has been sent by both helicopters and boats to those affected. Temporary emergency accommodation has also been provided.
This amount of rain is rare in Thailand at this time of year, with the dry season usually running from November to January.
Transport has been disrupted across the affected area, with flights being delayed, and suspension to bus and train services.
The extreme weather conditions have led to the closure of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province Airport, with all flights being declared as cancelled, until conditions improve.
Several flights to and from Samui International Airport have also been cancelled or delayed.
The British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office have warned travellers currently in southern Thailand: “There continues to be widespread flooding in southern Thailand, including in Koh Samui, Krabi, Trang, and Koh Phangan, and other areas frequented by tourists.
“Some ferries and flights have been delayed or cancelled and road traffic is difficult.
“The local authorities are providing assistance to the worst affected areas.
“If you are travelling in these areas you should check with your tour operator, monitor local media and follow the advice of local authorities.”
British nationals make more than one million trips to Thailand each year.
