The US Department of State have prolonged their travel warning across Europe, as major upcoming events are set to take place across the Summer such as the European Championship 2016 and The Tour De France. With these events come many tourists and supporters, making them potential major terror targets. It stated “We are alerting US citizens to the risk of potential terrorist attacks throughout Europe, targeting major events, tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centres and transportation.”
Francois Hollande, the president of France, stated that terrorism continues to be the largest potential risk to effect the games. Certain matches are on the highest of alerts, including England v Russia, with up to 20,000 England supporters said to be travelling to France for the games, which begin on 10th June 2016. After extending their state of emergency to the end of July, France will be stepping up their security procedures by increasing the amount of security guards surrounding the games, and making supporters go through metal detectors when entering the stadiums. 1,200 security guards will be working to protect the England v Russia game on Saturday 11 June 2016. Professional bomb detection squads will also be auditing the players training grounds, stadiums and hotels, for their safety.
It is advised that if you are travelling to France for the European Championships or Tour De France over the Summer that you are vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour.
