What is vascular dementia?

Vascular dementia is caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, which damages and eventually kills brain cells. It’s the second most common type of dementia in the UK after Alzheimer’s disease, and because it stems from problems with blood vessels, we include it with blood and circulatory conditions.

It can follow a single large stroke, a series of small strokes, or gradual narrowing of the small vessels deep in the brain. Symptoms often include slower thinking, trouble with planning or concentration, confusion and changes in mood, and they may get worse in steps rather than steadily. Treatment focuses on the underlying causes, such as blood pressure. The NHS vascular dementia page has more on symptoms and care.

Why do I need to declare vascular dementia for travel insurance?

Vascular dementia is a pre-existing medical condition, and we need to know about it for several reasons. It’s caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, so the risk of a stroke or TIA is higher. Unfamiliar places can also bring on confusion, and falls or missed medication are more likely away from your usual routine. Any of these could lead to treatment abroad or a trip being cancelled.

If it isn’t declared, a claim connected to it could be refused or the payout reduced.

Can I get travel insurance with vascular dementia?

Many people with vascular dementia can still get cover. Whether it’s offered depends on how far the dementia has progressed, whether you need help with daily activities, past strokes or TIAs, recent falls or hospital admissions, and any other conditions such as heart disease or diabetes.

What we’ll ask about vascular dementia

Vascular dementia can be screened online in a few minutes. The questions are brief and relate to the condition, and you’ll get the outcome immediately as part of your quote.

Your result

Once the questions are done, the outcome appears straight away. Check the quote to find out whether vascular dementia has been accepted. An accepted condition is already part of the premium it shows. If it can’t be included, the screening will say so before you go any further.

If health changes before the holiday

Vascular dementia can change suddenly, so please tell us about any new diagnosis, change in medication, hospital admission or referral before you travel. Cover may need to be reviewed, and a change that isn’t reported could affect a related claim.

What vascular dementia travel insurance can cover

With the condition declared and accepted, emergency medical treatment abroad can be covered. If confusion or a fall leads to a hospital stay in Malta, for example, the costs of emergency care can be covered, as can returning home with a medical escort. All of this is subject to the policy terms, exclusions, limits and excess.

If health gets worse before the trip and a doctor advises against travel, cancellation cover may help with non-refundable costs. Some policies can also cover cancellation if a travelling companion or close relative becomes seriously ill, subject to the terms.

It won’t cover planned care or treatment abroad, or anything linked to a condition that wasn’t declared.

Single trip or annual cover with vascular dementia

Single trip cover is often the most practical choice. Annual multi-trip insurance may be available, but this depends on the screening result.

Will vascular dementia affect the cost of travel insurance?

The price can be affected, though by how much isn’t something we can say in advance. It depends on the result of online medical screening, which may ask how the dementia is treated and how well it and any linked conditions are controlled. Age, the place you’re visiting and how long you’ll be away are also weighed up. The quote shows the cost before you choose whether to go ahead.

Travelling with vascular dementia: practical tips

The suggestions below are general and aren’t part of your cover.

Keep it familiar. Many people with dementia cope better with shorter trips, fewer changes and places they already know. A direct flight and a single hotel for the whole stay are usually easier than a touring holiday. Quieter times of year can reduce crowds and noise.

Airports can be overwhelming. Book special assistance in advance and ask about the hidden disabilities sunflower lanyard, which many UK airports recognise. Allow extra time at every stage, and keep travel documents with the companion rather than the person with dementia.

Carry a card or bracelet with your name, the hotel address and a contact number, and a recent photo in case someone gets lost. Keep a routine as far as possible, including meal and medication times, and watch for dehydration in the heat, which can make confusion worse.

Talk to the GP or memory clinic before booking, especially about long flights and any changes to medication timings.

Vascular dementia travel insurance FAQs

Can a carer or relative buy the policy for someone with vascular dementia?

Yes, a family member or carer can complete the screening and buy the policy, as long as the answers are accurate. Each traveller’s own medical conditions need to be declared too.

Do I need to declare past strokes as well as vascular dementia?

Yes. Any strokes or TIAs should be declared alongside vascular dementia when the screening asks about them, as they’re closely linked. The screening may use all of this to reach a result.

Will a fall abroad be covered if I have vascular dementia?

If the condition has been declared and accepted, emergency treatment after a fall can be covered, subject to the policy terms, limits and excess. If the screening asks about previous falls, answer honestly so the result is accurate.

Is it safe to fly with dementia?

Many people with dementia fly, but it’s a decision for the person’s doctor and family. Some people find the airport more stressful than the flight. Talk to the GP and airline about what support is available.

What if a carer can’t travel at the last minute?

Cancellation cover may help if the trip has to be cancelled because a travelling companion is unwell, depending on the policy terms. Make sure everyone travelling is named on the policy and any of their own conditions are declared.
